CrossFit: The Ultimate Hack for the ADD Fitness Mindset

Before CrossFit, fitness looked a lot different. You either lifted weights to get stronger, ran or biked for endurance, trained for a specific sport, or did some basic combination of those things. But rarely did people truly mix strength and conditioning.

The common belief was that if you wanted to get stronger, you couldn’t do much conditioning. And if you wanted to improve your endurance, you couldn’t lift heavy. You had to pick a lane and stay in it.

Then CrossFit came along and completely flipped the script.

It was revolutionary in how it combined strength, conditioning, and gymnastics — blending elements from every side of fitness into one program. Of course, it came with plenty of pushback from traditional strength and conditioning circles. But the truth was undeniable: CrossFit redefined what it meant to be “fit.”

My Journey: From Bored to Balanced

Before I found CrossFit, my training was like a lot of people’s. I lifted weights because I wanted to be as jacked as possible. Then, like many others, I went through an endurance phase. I ran 5Ks, 10Ks, even tried some triathlons. It was all fun — for a while.

But eventually, it got boring.

I’ve always had what I call an “ADD fitness mindset.” I go all in on something, but if it’s repetitive, I lose interest fast. Just running or just biking wasn’t going to keep me engaged long-term.

Then I discovered CrossFit, and everything changed.

CrossFit allowed me to be fit, strong, and engaged without ever getting bored. Every day brought a new challenge, a new stimulus, and a different time domain. Twenty years later, I still love that some days I get to run long distances, some days I get to lift heavy, and some days I get to go short and fast.

Throw in partner workouts and the community aspect, and it truly becomes the perfect training style for someone wired like me.

Why I’m Writing This

Recently, I signed up for my second Hyrox race this year. The training has been great, but it’s a lot of running. Sixty percent of the race is just that — running. It’s fun in its own way, but I’ll be honest… it can get monotonous.

Putting in those hours has made me reflect on how special CrossFit really is. It’s not just a training program. It’s a system that keeps you mentally engaged, physically challenged, and constantly improving.

Some days you lift. Some days you condition. Some days you grind. You never know exactly what’s coming, and that’s part of the magic.

The Perfect Fit for the ADD Mindset

If you’re someone who struggles to stay consistent with fitness because you get bored easily, maybe it’s not that you lack discipline — maybe you just haven’t found the right type of training yet.

CrossFit is built for people who crave variety, challenge, and growth. It blends strength, endurance, and skill work in a way that keeps things exciting while still delivering results.

For someone like me, it’s the ultimate hack for the ADD fitness mindset — and after two decades, it’s still what keeps me showing up every day.
